San Juan: is based on Puerto Rico, the very popular and award winning game by Andreas Seyfarth, but different enough to give players new challenges and opportunities for fun and enjoyment. Players travel now to the capital city of this beautiful island. Who will build the most important buildings? Players build palaces, poor houses, silver smelters, gold mines, and many others - each with its own special features. The cleverest player will build well and win! As with Puerto Rico, players choose roles which can help all players, but the choosing player gets a special privilege with the role chosen. Players build buildings, produce and sell goods. Author: Andreas Seyfarth. Players: 2-4 aged 10+, 45-60 minutes to play. $22.94
Santa Fe Rails : players build the Union Pacific, Santa Fe, Great Northern, Kansas City, and Southern Pacific railroads from their bases in Chicago, New Orleans, Kansas City, and Milwaukee. Short lines like Texas Pacific, Western Pacific, and Rock Island, appear in the mid game. Playing City cards lays claim to victory points for the number of railroads connected to their cities. You must lay track pieces to create the connections of the major railroads to those cities. Special cards allow railroads to establish Branch Lines or even the laying of extra tracks on a turn. Boomtowns can be created out of small-value cities. Short line railroads can connect out-of-the-way places. The game ends when all the track pieces have been used. The Cities with the higher values & most railroad connections will score the most. Ages 12+, 2-5 players, play time 60 min. $30.80

To win in SAMURAI you must be supported by one of 3 groups (peasant, clergy, nobility) and have strong ties to the others. Players start with the same forces & deploy them to the spaces around power figures of the 3 groups which are "won" by the player with the strongest sympathetic force.
Author: Reiner Knizia; 2-4;ages 10+; 1 hr. to play

San Gimignano : "The city of beautiful towers" is situated in Tuscany, 56 km south of Florence. A major producer of saffron, it became incredibly wealthy during the 13th Century. As space became premium within the city walls, the rich families had no option but to extend their mansions upwards, and no less than 72 magnificent towers were built as symbols on their wealth and power. The city lost it's importance when the great plague killed 75% of the inhabitants, and only 14 towers are still standing today.
In the game, players build towers using real stones (the same material as used in Babel), which makes the game quite heavy. Districts are laid out gradually in the shape of hexagons, and to raise the towers must a player be present in several districts. For 2-6 players, ages 12+, playing time about 1 hour

Scotland Yard is one of the best selling games we've ever had and for good reason. 1 player plays a fugitive and the others are the cops. The "crook" uses an allotment of tokens for the subway, taxis or buses to race around London trying to avoid capture. His or her movement is hidden but every few turns, their location becomes know and that's when "the Yard" closes in for the kill. Few games provide the tension of Scotland Yard. You'll squirm as the police tighten the noose, assuming the cops know how to cooperate. 2-5, 8+; 45 mins. $36$30.79

Snits: The tiny Snits have been persecuted for ages by the huge Bolotomi. Then, one day, inspiration strikes! A few brave Snits run inside a Bolotomus, and attack from within. Can they kick the snot out of their foe's internal organs before the Runnungitms get 'em? It's the Snits' Revenge!
This wacky classic was one of Tom Wham's very first games. Now it's back along with the prequel, Snit Smashing, which previously appeared only in magazine form and has been unfindable for almost two decades. Snit Smashing explains why the Snits are so upset. They just want to run back and forth, to and from the ocean, reproducing. The Bolotomi smash them for fun (hey, it's boring on that beach). No wonder the Snits want revenge.
Snit Smashing is for 2 to 4 players and takes about an hour. It's a game of outguessing (or psyching out) your opponents.
Snits' Revenge is basically a 2-player game and plays in about a half-hour. It's more of a traditional wargame (if you can imagine a board that represents the insides of a huge imaginary creature). However, the attacking Snits can be divided between up to four players, who fight it out if they defeat the Bolotomus . . . making it a 5-player game which takes an hour or more.

Best Family Strategy Game of 1997 by GAMES Magazine
It's a puzzle, it's a maze, it's a game & much more! Place your pieces one at a time on the board. Try to form continuous rows of color from edge to edge. But one wrong tile and the whole row is worthless. It gets harder and harder as the number of vacant spaces on your board and your possible choices diminish. Everyone has the same chance as everyone else because everyone plays the same tiles in the same order. But all the boards will be different at the end and only one player will have used the tiles the best way, scored the most points, and won the game. THIS 2005 VERSION IS FOR Solitaire or up to 6 players ages 10+

Our take: How many family games can you name that play well solitair, AND with up to 6 players? The good news is that this new edition, like the original in '93, allows for SIX players instead of the previous one that handled only up to 4.

War on Terror Board Game: Controversy is the keyword here. The game, which has been lambasted in the press (mainly British; it's designed in England) as sick, dangerous, & insensitive, has been banned by major retailers. It is NOT for everyone. Some have called it at best over the top, and at worst subversive.

The play has the feel of Risk and Supremacy, and enjoys surprisingly favorable reviews by the gaming community. 2-6 players, ages: Adult

Tom (Greenbelt MD) offers: I've never seen any other game that has a concept like the terrorists in the game--it's effectively a phantom player that can be manipulated by any character, but works for no one.  (Unless you lose or deliberately drop out of the empires, and then you get to be a terrorist full-time.)  From the start, I'd been worried the game might be a gimmick that wasn't developed or play-tested enough, but we were quite pleased with the dynamics.  My girlfriend--not usually a boardgame player--devised a clever scheme wherein she nuked her own territory in order to clear out the neighboring terrorists, but used a bunker and a specific group of cards to re-colonize Europe in one dramatic turn.  Our game had unpredictable excitement with give and take among the players and wasn't decided until the very last turn.

Wildlife: A game for ultimate survival. Your species is threatened for extinction. You must fight for survival with other creatures, adapting to changing environments. In this evolutionary game, players control up to 6 types of creatures indigenous to different regions of the land: Eagles (mountains), Bears (forests), Crocodiles (water), Mammoths (plains), Men (savannah), and Snakes (desert). Each player takes the role of one of these 6 creatures, and tries to expand their herd and learn new abilities. As long as there is enough room in the region for all of the animals, the creatures can live together in harmony. Otherwise, battles erupt amongst the creatures for control of the region. Now, the success of the creatures depends on how well they adapt to their new terrain.
