3D Chess (aka Space or Strato Chess): takes the game of chess into the third dimension! Players risk being attacked from either above or below and must think of the game in terms of left, right, forward and back as well as up and down. The multi level game board is 12" high and designed in brushed aluminum with black and crystal clear polish. When first seen on the original Star Trek, being played by Spock, it created a demand for 3D chess. But at the time they were first produced, in the late '60s and '70s, there really were no rules. Over the years, many have been suggested but the game is probably played differently by each player. This is actually the first version (2007) we've stocked that actually has rules.


Alternately, William D'Agostino, administrator of an online Yahoogroup 3D Chess Club with nearly 200 members, kindly offers these "Millennium 3D Rules" which are very playable indeed! The group is a great resource to find someone to play and to discuss 3D chess in general.

Although the chess pieces still move as in standard Chess, the lack of side edges on the Noble Board makes this variant a vibrant way of playing an ancient game.

Simpsons Chess Tin: Update from the set above, and proof that new isn't always better. Collectors may like this one, chess players may not. The pieces are nice enough (weighted plastic) and a bit heavier than the original, with a 3.5" King. Bart is the bishop. Bases are wider, and this is good, but the boards is on the back of the tin (approx 12"), a bit too cramped, and any inevitable dent with the tin box could turn this into a game of Jenga. You may want to use another board. UPDATE 2005: A cardboard board has been added inside the tin. Good Idea ;)$34.65
