Large Format Puzzles & the elderly
Large Format Jigsaw Puzzles: Who's buying them?
1) People who simply can't see as well as they used to, or just find it hard
to manipulate the very small pieces of standard puzzles.
2) Children seem to prefer the larger pieces and can't handle 500-1000 piece
puzzles.
3) Anyone, individual or family, who wants a puzzle they can complete in an
evening
4) Therapists & the families of elderly who may suffer from strokes, memory
loss due to Alzheimer's or other age related problems.
The first 3 groups are obvious and require little explanation. It is the last group that has grown the fastest. We receive numerous emails from caregivers, friends & family members extolling the virtues of Large Format puzzles. There are many organizations that deal with issues of this sort. One such group is MindStart. In a single opening paragraph on their website, they seem to say it all:
Persons with memory loss, due to Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, often become less active as they encounter tasks that are difficult for them to do. This can lead to a faster rate of decline. MindStart has recognized this phenomenon and offers activity products that are key to keeping persons with dementia active.
The advantages:
Alleviate boredom and support caregivers
Works for various levels of memory loss
